Tajj

So playing a game of LoU and just picked up Tajj in Meren and I was wondering where are his people ? I remember in the old Legends of Aranna campaign having to find Najj's people and they were in a swamp.

Since I am traipsing through the Cloud Forest on hte way to Lang I thought I would ask...Are the Half giants in the swamp around Lang? I remember wandering around there for quite some time a couple of years ago and never found them.

Here we are on the beach in Meren, taking a break from adventuring:

Hi Kathy, The half giants are a long way from Tajj/Najj, how that happened is a Dungeon Siege mystery. Personally I think they just left him on the beach sleeping, The trader camp is after the Dig Site where you find Algher. After a complete tour of the Dig Site and a long walk down the trail you will come upon The Half Giant Trader Camp on the edge of the second Swamp Leading to The Mountain of the Dead and Cicatrix, the undead Centaur.

Hi Lili!

We have little misunderstanding. I am playing Legends of Utrae, not Aranna. Tajj (Najj's long lost cousin)is the half giant that you meet on the beach in Meren and wants to join your party. Apparently these half giants wander off from their friends on a regular basis.

I'm curious if they are near Meren at all, or a long trek away like Najj is in the LoAranna campaign. Well, thnx for reading. Smile

Hi Kathy,
Oh woops, I will have to check on that for you. LoA LoU all the names start to run together after so many years. I will have a look at some of my data and report back to you.

Lili

The half giants are not in this swamp!

Lili

Kathy Hi.
I looked through this swamp and that marsh and Tajj's shipmates are not in site yet. Now I did find some large bones, big fish, big trees but as yet no half giants except the one that was in my party from the start. Thinking he might have some idea where the other half giants were camping. Alas he is as confused about where they are as Tajj is. Oh well I will keep searching.

lili

Well Kathy,

Look what you have started. I looked around with various saved game I had, of the DS1 and DS2 maps and could not remember where the Half Giants where hanging out SO. I started up a game of LoU this morning. Just finished clearing Hovart's Folly, which when you read the history is not really a folly at all, it is sort of a Taj Mahal or at least a twisted love story. I am outside the entrance to the Crystwind Mines, not sure if I will have time to go on today in my search for the Half Giants but I will get there soon enough.

I'm a bad influence. Laughing out loud

We have made it to Merin, I dismissed the gargoyle so I could hire Tajj, but now who do I dismiss to hire the elf by the shrine and the person in the inn? Oh my what to do what to do! There are way to many good NPCs in Legends of Utrae 3.2. I was delayed in Fallraen for a while with the book quest because I forgot to pick up Lloyd's ring and The sister's message quest because I forgot to talk to the right person in Crystwind. Once I figured out what I was doing wrong things moved swiftly to open the road to Merin. Decided to forgo the quarry quest as there really is nothing good to pick up. So now it is off to the cloud forest on our quest to find out where Tajj's people escaped to. Oh do not forget the quest for the silly bird you crazy elf. Must complete the quests. Strange that after playing DS2 for so long I keep forgetting that the people with quests do not have a quest icon over their head. That is one of the reasons that DS1 and its off shoots where harder than any DS2/BW map. Anyway time to buy Tajj some good equipment and spells.
Elf

Well, nice. Thanks for taking the time to play along. We must solve this mystery. I am at basically the same spot in the Cloud Forest. Gotta keep an eye out for those bandits...

Kathy it appears that the half-giants are no where between Merin and Hiroth Castle. They are not anywhere in the endless dessert. I do not think sand makes a good Desert but then I am not a game designer. They are not in the pyramids. I wonder if they are hiding with the Asparagus people on that island in the desert? Maybe they are in the great northern forest visiting the elf with the Hiroth Stone? I am getting loster and loster the farther I go. I thought I knew this map, but I guess not. Maybe age has something to do with my forgetfulness, since I have been playing this map for more years than I can count.

Elf

Hi Kathy,
The half giants do not appear to be hidden in the Endless Desert or the Lost Pyramids -- However taking a walk through one of the pyramids I found myself on an island with the Asparagorns nasty little veggie people. I saw a good number of dead half giants there and a lore book explaining what the Utraean Virus did to the half giants. So from what the lore book said the half giants will not be found on their home island. A totally different story than the one told in Broken World. However that is not really that strange as the things the lore book referenced took place before the founding of the empire of Stars...

Elf

I had finished all of the quests in the legends of utrae 3.2 except for finding Tajj's people, flooded sanctuary and the quarry quest. So I thought hmmm maybe they are near each other. So From Hiroth I took the main Teleport System to Lang, then the short range teleport to Redwood Gap, completed the flooded sanctuary quest, then headed for Merin via the sulfer tunnels which placed me in bottom of the quarry. Completed that quest. So all that remained was to find Tajj's People. Now here is the weirdness. I decided I would look at the quest to see if I could find a clue that I had missed and found the quest had been completed. I never found the half giants Now the picture in the quest log, looks exactly like the half giant camp in LoA but I never found it. Pokes iryan with a pointy stick.

Hehe My apologies but I can't help but laughing that the map been released for so long and only now has this been discovered. Nobody has mentioned this discrepancy before to my knowledge.

The answer is actually very simple. I believe from memory in v2.0 of Legends the Giants actually existed on Eastern Island but madness had gripped them and they were hostile. In v3.0 and up they were replaced by the Asparagorns.

So when the Half-Giants were replaced the quest wasn't changed and thus the discrepancy and no Half-Giant camp. When you reached the Island the quest was completed at the same time as the Island Quest completed so you didn't notice.

So I'm sorry you spent so much time searching for something that didn't exist but I hope you had fun again in the old map.

Looking at the files in the mod while researching this (as I've forgotten about this discrepancy as well) I found a feature of Legends that would be great in the DS2 maps if it could be implemented in a seamless manner. That is that the monster populations often change in a number of regions between map modes or as the documentation states, you won't be fighting Krug all the time near Elddim. That's something I really don't like about DS2 map modes, in Veteran and Elite you'll always be fighting the exact same monsters in the exact same areas. It's one of the reasons I've never played much beyond Mercenary Mode in the Maps.

For two reasons. First I have been playing the map for uncounted years and never noticed this before. Should have had a clue when I found all the dead half giants on the island in the desert and read the lore book about them going mad. The lore book seemed out of place but as did the dead bodies, but in the past I guess I was just to busy getting the town stones to notice. Second I should have noticed that there is no Tajj in merin on the Utraean Peninsula Multi Player Map whereas most of the other quests are still there.

Oh well it was great fun playing it again. Must remember to wear my glasses when playing ds1 or ds2 from now on.

Elf

Well, that answers that question then. Thanks Iryan and thank you Lili for playing along. I am certain the reason I never noticed any discrepancy is that I have not played that far. I have a terrible habit of adding and changing mods through out the game as well as starting over because I wanted a character to have pigtails or some other dumb thing. I am determined that *this* time will be different and thus far I have not done anything stupid. Whew! Wink
