I use paint.net too, along with a few other image editing programs. It is a really great program with lots of plug ins and cool features. It supports .psd files, which is very handy. It is pretty fun to use and maybe even a little addictive... Insane

Not meaning to high jack your blog, garthagain, Smile but I had a couple of things to add...

I also use Photofiltre 7 which is great for layering images together and supports alpha channels. There are plugins available, but much of the information and the forums are in French. They do have a sub-forum for English speakers, as well as some documentation in English. There is a large selection of language plug ins if English or French is not your primary language. They have a premium program as well, Photofiltre 10 which is free to try out for 30 days.

The Gimp is a pretty classic program.

You guys are going to think I am a weirdo (just in case you didn't already) Tongue but Tux Paint for kids is a surprisingly fun (and relaxing) program for adults or at least for this adult. It has some cool little features and you can make your own brushes (even animated ones) if you want.

I must agree with you both that paint.net is a nice program. However showing my age my favorite image editor is Corel Photo House. It came out when Windows was version 3.1 and has worked with every version of windows since then even Windows 10 with a little help from me, telling Windows 10 yes it is a real program, and you can execute it even if it is not in the registry. Not sure where one would find an antique like this but it comes with 6 CDs containing all kinds of textures. It does not support DDS or PSD with alpha channels. It does support raw format, gif, jpg and about ten other older image formats. I have created all my armor and weapons using it. I use Photshop 7, yes the before the cloud version, to add alpha channels, shading, and such. To make DDS format files I have a plug-in for Photoshop. Also about 10 programs for changing formats like RAW to PSD, PSD to RAW, DDS converter. I learned with these programs when windows, Dungeon Siege and I where children. Yes I even ran Dungeon Siege on a 386 with Windows 98SE. As my friend Kathy said, sorry for the temporary blog hijack.
