CMDMod Feedback

I’m just setting this up here as another place for feedback on the CMDMod. I understand it will take a while for comments to role in, but I want to set this up before I forget so that there’s another place to write comments, questions, and suggestions.

Basically what the mod does is allow you to control up to 8 squads of units. Each squad contains 3-8 units, which follow the 'Field Commander' (ie, the party member). The point is to add a little more RTS into the game, and eventually have large-scale battles where you control one side and the AI (or hopefully another player), controls the other. In addition, co-op can be played, though due to Dungeon Siege's limitations, it can be frustrating to control. Singleplayer is recommended.

I've attached screenshots to this post, and will also attach screenshots to my posting of the mod.

The mod and maps can be found here: https://www.siegetheday.org/?q=node/7088

Hope you guys enjoy it!

As a starting point they are both looking good. Could not find any conflicts with my mods. Wish there where a few more areas to explore. Some things I found disheartening where:
1. There where no female commanders in either map. I am sure this is an oversight.
2. I could find no vendors in the Fedwyrr's Ridge map.
3. The lower level combat and nature magic spells where not being sold. Not having zap, healing hands and fireshot for an entry level character or a hired commander, makes things difficult. My Primary character has all the weapons, armor and spells she would ever require. However most players start with a very basic character.

What an amazing thing to get Dungeon Siege game engine to do.

I've just spent a few minutes in the Utraean city map (Zaurask Rebellion), enough to see what it is about and that the concept works.

I don't think it has to be about a primary character at all. If I start a new game on that map with a new character, said character will be like a non-combatant civilian mayor directing the defense, whose main role will be recruiting (activating) more squads as the front line commanders collect enough gold from the attackers they kill. Secondary role for the mayor: carrying items of loot from one commander to another, or back to the vending machines to cash in. If it wasn't for that I'd be tempted to simply disband my starting character!

[EDIT] I noticed that the vending machines do sell Resurrect Scrolls but ones that have been made extremely expensive.

Care to provide a video or at least a few screenshots to give an idea about what the mod does?

Map Title: "(RTS)(PvE) The Zaurask Rebellion"
Description: "Take control of a Utraean Garrison on the outskirts of Mhakesha as you defend against endless hoardes [sic] of Zaurask."

1) Screenshot of Company A (the garrison's field troops - my name for them, not the author's) marching past their (civilian) governor in review. 6 squads (2 of archers, 2 of fighters and 2 of mages), each of a field commander plus 6 "other ranks" (4 for the mages) total count 38.

The singleton soldiers, who can also be seen, I guess will never come under the player's control, either staying at their posts or running out to maybe get killed if any attackers penetrate far enough.

2) Three of the reserve mercenary squads (lets call them Company B) down in the basement level (some of Company A can be seen upstairs in their starting positions).

Thanks for this^ RSimpkinuk7, been away for a while and didn't respond. The description suits it perfectly, couldn't have said it better myself. Mind if I add this into the description on the Mod download page?

1. No female characters due to it being a quick sketch of an idea. It is, as you said, an oversight, and I will add them in.
2. Yeah, the map is unfinished. There is one vendor who only sells weapons and armor at the second camp before the mines. Will create more, and make the map larger. Originally it was the PvP map that I scrapped, so some adjustments need to be made.
3. This is something I'm having trouble balancing. I want healing, and maybe combat, but I do not want the single character to become too overpowered. Just something I have to work out. Resurrect scrolls are supposed to be few and far between in order to make the player save the ability for when they think they need it most; to use strategically as an aspect of the game.

All that being said, thank you for trying out the map, and I will try my best to continue to update both the maps, the mod, and create more maps when I have the time.

You did write it yourself. If you mean the "Take control … against endless hoardes of Zaurask" bit, that is. I simply reported what the tooltip shows when held over the map's title in the selection menu. (Should it not be "hordes" though?)

If you mean my screenshot explanations, then yes, use the shots themselves or anything I wrote about "Company A, the field force" and "Company B, the mercenaries in reserve" - verbatim, or adapted as you see fit.

About the starting character - maybe what the mod wants is halfway between a person (with own stats and skills, able to pick things up, trade with the automats, and hire mercenary commanders) and a pack animal (no spell-casting, no using weapons, health increases automatically to match party level, cannot be part of a party without people).

There are ways to alter the starting character. The official "Return to Arhok" map directs us to visit an NPC who upgrades our hero by 10 levels (choice of melee, ranged, nature or combat skill). And in "Reign of Chaos" [English translation] the modder - Psychogun2003 - fixed the character creation screen itself to force a custom appearance, keeping male/female as about the only options left to player choice. At the very least the same technique should work for a playable Utraean. (Longer-standing members of this site could quote you other examples, I'm sure.)
