Are you talking about a custom avatar for posting in a forum? If so, then you would need to register with a site (this one for example ) before you can post with an avatar.

To use a favorite picture,simply crop it to the desired proportions with an image editor. If this is indeed the issue you are asking about I can provide further assistance if you need it, but I am not going to right now because I am not sure if that is what you are asking for help with.
