SN being hacked!

Sharkull's picture
LoneKnight's picture

Woe the day that hackers force us to give up rights to those that were once available to all. Hackers should be rounded up and killed. Terrible. What more, it makes everyone suspicious of each other. I hope I'm not being suspected. Sad

check out member "cgwxyhh" profile - get a mod to delete the link - spambots can be dangerous..

a well-wisher

Well, I don't agree about the "killing" part but I agree that loss of rights due to "fear" is not cool...

Wouldn't the admins of the site be able to delete anything questionable??????? This seems odd.....

Tried the link. Doesn't work.

Or one could just be more concerned with quest's who only post to give warnings about other posters.

LoneKnight's picture

Yes, that too. Questionable.

Strider978's picture

as the link is just a 404 I won't remove it from the posters profile, if and when he posts a spam topic it will be removed and the user banned.

As for the guest who posts warnings, this 'guest' should start remebering to log in more Wink and also if there is a question about site matters, please feel free to PM, myself or one of the mods.

(edit *me* reads strider's post " As for the guest who posts warnings, this 'guest' should start remebering to log in more"... and now thinks maybe "guest" is a member who forgot to log in??) :?:

That was what was on my mind...that is what I meant by "odd"...I mean, gee, 3 posts calling attention to a questionable link? seems like actually trying to get people to notice it, or click on it, but as I see re: posts by strider978 and Lone Knight, it is a 404, so...I don't know. Weird. :?

I just wanted to mention that I was able to join at SN yesterday and post without any apparent problems..hopefully this problem is on it's way to being fixed. I am leery about saying anymore because I think giving this "hacker" attention, even negative attention is feeding their desire to cause more damage..kind of like a kid throwing a temper tantrum or misbehaving...just my opinion.

I know who you are quest ^^ (no worries I will keep that info to myself as it is no concern). Try to remember to log in. We listen to our posters. I think turning off quest mode would be good, but that is not up to me. Then again we may have a good reason for it that I'm not aware of. I don't see it as a security issue though.

- new member "cqwxyhh" has posted a very odd link in his profile
- I suggest that a mod deletes it immediately
- given what is happening at SN..

be vigilant!! 8O

Don't worry I am.

Excellent forum? An Excellent forum would have updated everything after the first hack attempt, SN didn't that is why the hacks kept going on... It's possible that the one that exploided this bug didn't even know anything about the site but just looked for a forum that wasn't update to hack it...
This message:
You need to fix this.
update your forum version

is i think left by the “hacker” as a last message... It isn't a real hacker as he is using old, known, bugs that he exploits..

Let's keep the discussion civil please. Threats of physical violence are unwanted anywhere on these forums.

Very good words of wisdom, Firebat. SN really outta get updated, but therein lies the issue that Sjr doesn't have complete control over the site, which I think is a shame, considering he basically rules it moreso than Witness. He shouldn't have to run and get Witness to set things right once the hacker comes. I think we'd all do better with Sjr behind the reigns...but it's not my decision, it's Witness'.

Invision boards are no longer free like when the site was started. I am not even sure where one would get a Invision board update. At this point it would either need to stay as is or much work is needed to be done to convert it to a different board setup.

The bug exploit showed that the forums can't stay this way...

If the current forum can't be updated I would ask (since the forums were supposed to be closed a year ago) who would do the work to convert the site. Witness clearly states that she is "moving on"...would she be willing to invest the time and/or money to update?

LoneKnight's picture

I sure as hell would fork over money to Sjr and/or Witness to keep SN running, and I know two good website managers who are in the Ara-ff, a big DS clan. They'd definately help.

Sjr, could you get me and others who would want sn's database? I do not want my past erased like game-editing, dsnetguide, blackthorn, siege-mods, and team elemental. Pm me if this is possible.

me too! i would like a token of siegenetwork's treasures. Sad

Not to mention me!

Sharkull's picture

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how big the SN forum database is? I'm thinking at least 100MB (considering # of posts + attachments)... and maybe even much more.

Hah, I didn't realize Sad . I suppose we can all seed it... /laughs

There's another problem. All personal information would have to be taken out.

Might not be that big of a problem though.

Nevermind...

Do i notice a certain mood of sellout about SN's remains!?

Thus, will SN ever come back? - I fear a bit about the 3 pages long thread about my war hound mod... :?

SJR has been in contact with Witness so we'll see what happens. I know she was working on converting the forums but I don't know if she has the time to finish it anytime soon.

Also there are people impersonating her online and hacking her site. It would for sure take a toll on most peoples motivation to get it done. Sad
