DS2 Expansion: The Broken World

This forum is the new proper home for discussions regarding Dungeon Siege II: Broken World, the expansion pack to Dungeon Siege II.

PS. I posted this here because I didn't really think it worthy of front page news... nothing's really been announced yet. There's just a named new forum... (but GPG must be close to letting us know something Smile ).

Gah, looks like they won't make a new map. They mentioned for the xpack just 1 extra act.

But they'll have to add the new act as a new map... don't you think? Wink

True, it might not be as big as we might hope, but I'm going to wait and see what comes before I form an opinion on it.

It could install itself into the existing map. I don't like the current map we have now and neither do many players. It is way too narrow. Ds1 has a multiplayer, single player, expansion, and yesterhaven's map, so guess I was just hoping they would add a new map.

Just goes to show that they won't take the effort to make a new map....or maybe they will?

Does not seem so atm. If their LDs stop being busy we might see something like yesterheaven. The act will probably be large and nice to have. I just thought a new map would be smart. I have heard all the complaints from the players and know what needs to be done for a fun map. They would have to remake a map from scratch to make a good map.

Well....believe it or not, but I'd like a total re-working of DSII so that there's little to no more existing bugs or glitches...like it SHOULD have been. I'd treasure that moreso than another buggy, semi-enjoyable trainwreck of a sequel.

I didn't think it was that buggy. Least it was not for me. Of course there were some bad designs that killed the game. The save system for mp is just god awful Sad . I can work around that and is included in my map's design. The crc is bad news too. I hope they get rid of that crap. It sucks bad for modding. Biddle told me that is what was really broken so perhaps they did something about it. What sucked was the gameplay for me. It looks like they have covered that in the xpack from the e3 video I saw. Looks fun to me. Seems they are getting away from that automated gameplay I always hated. We really do need a good hack n slash game out there. I hope it gets the fanbase back. If they made a great map then it'd be hard for me to compete with /keke. I'm looking forward to the xpack even though they didn't add in a new map. I think they are spread too thin to make a new map from the ground up. It is a ton of work. After this xpack devs may be able to support the modding community again. I have not contacted any devs lately, since I can imagine how busy they are with the xpack.

Agree with you there Wyvante. If the crc check disappeared I think the game would be much more enjoyable. But even if they leave it in I can personally still enjoy the game on the level I want to.

I wonder if it will be possible to make new multi classes with the expansion, maybe a melee/ranged "Ranger" or nature/combat "High Mage". That'd be pretty swell. Smile

I am very curious about those dwarves, seems like there will be a surprise there.
Speculation because of a screenshot I've seen on ganespot and what they said in the video about all the races in the world.

The Dryads will for sure be more interesting to play now as well.

Reading the recent IGN article (linked from PDS: http://www.forumplanet.com/planetdungeonsiege/topic.asp?fid=3649&tid=1891968 ) it sounds like the two known dual-class abilities will be race specific ("Fist of Stone Dwarf" and "Blood Assassin Elf "). :? I wonder if there are going to be dual-class combinations for each race... I certainly hope so.

Note: I'm avoiding the video because FB mentioned on the Forge that it contains spoilers (Thanks for the warning FB Smile ). The IGN article has some story spoilers too, in case anyone doesn't want to hear anything about the game plot before release.

That would be great! (Makes me think that the CRC was M$'s idea).

I wonder how long it will take before a BW compatible version of SE2 will come out.

I don't care about the storyline so checked out the e3 video. Looks like gpg is on a better track now. They brought back procs mentioned in the video which sleaker modded awhile back. They said they did a better job with new effects which looked good but cannot tell from that video. They also mentioned something about new stuff for crafting. The quality was low so couldn't tell. I'm wondering about modding the xpack as well. I poked the question at garage here. http://garage.gaspowered.com/?q=node/4035

What is CRC that you all hate so much?

I think that it is the scanning of the charactor every thime you play, to make sure it hasnt been corrupted. If you edit your charactor in any way, it wont work. Evil Sad

It is the reason for Elys' All Saves hacked exe... Basically, patch v2.2 added a save game CRC that tags a save game with a checksum based on the current resources in use at the time. Add or remove a mod and the checksum is different, so your save games with a different checksum will be unusable (not available in the in-game menus). DS2Mod has the "loadanysave" startup flag to bypass the CRC, and Elys' hack does it automatically... but the retail exe's CRC is unavoidable, which is a real pain.

im just hoping theres a pvp aspect , i think the community would grow bigger if there was pvp in the expansion

There is a PvP map (with working PvP play) floating around in one of the threads here, but I don't think it is complete. Gonna see if I can find it.

Found it: http://std.seijsing.se/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1135#1135

Oh! I thought that PvP map was posted on SN / SM... (now what board had that other post requesting PvP...?).

You mean the one by changsoo lee?

I never tried it but here it is: Arrow DS2 pvp file and map

That is the same file. But yes, that was the one.

As for DS2 modding, we faced a significant challenge balancing the need to provide a fun, stable game-play experience with supporting mod-able content. Things like the CRC check have to exist to keep unauthorized save games and content from causing problems with other peoples' game-play experience. It would be great if we could just rip that out and assume that everyone who accessed our content would do so for modding purposes or standard gameplay, but this is unfortunately a case of the few ruining it for the many.

Looks like modding is out.

Since no one appears to have a clue at GPG. At the very least the CRC check could of been limited to joining multiplayer games on gameSpy and nothing else.

From what I can tell maybe ONE of the 4 things I cited on the garage thread (Lets discuss the bad things in Dungeon Siege II) will be fixed. Looks like I'll be waiting for the expansion to show up on Ebay or Amazon second hand Wink New content stuffed into a broken game doesn't exactly tickle my fancy.

Sharkull's picture

It currently does look like mod playing will continue to be a pain, but they may just be saying that to calm the fears of "hackers" in MP games. (At least that's my hope).

BTW, you didn't need to quote an offsite source... that interview is posted on SiegeTheDay too. Smile

All we need is an exe without the crc-check or a mod that disables it.
And even without that you can still use mods. Course, it is a bit inconvenient to have a setup like this, but it still works and we have ds2mod for testing the mods.

On a different note, I'm looking forward to trying out the original DS2 with the new changes the expansion will bring.

Sharkull's picture

Yeah, me too... I'm going to start a new character when I get the expansion, and play the original map before getting in to the new act. Cool

Also, for those not reading the Garage, it looks like Veteran and Elite will be rebalanced (more difficult) for the expansion exe:

You could join the contest at herenaforge.org which is still open until 5 September...

And I heard that this site will also keep a contest to win a copy.....

The chance of me winning that is like impossible lol

You never know until you try. With some imagination and the proper tutorials you can make some pretty nifty stuff.

firebat's picture

Not so many people joined so your chance is very big... But you must be very fast as it closes tomorrow already...

According to my clock you have exactly 9 hours, 34 minutes from the time of this post when translated into the time zone where the contest that firebat spoke of is.
