Chatty Kathy's

How about a thread of general chatting? Maybe we can post things about ourselves to get to know each other better, or just post chatty stuff. So anyway, here are a few things about me:
My name is Kathleen.
I am in my late 30's.
I am 5 foot 2 inches.
I have dark brown curly hair that is to the middle of my back.
I like to read and write and play Dungeon Siege.
I like to post in forums.
My favorite pizza is mushroom

So...tell me about you? Smile

BTW, this is the "real" Chatty Cathy

You know it is funny becase I am such a messy packrat otherwise, but I cannot stand a cluttery desktop. Those desktops you guys have would give me a headache... :P

Here is the desktop on my new baby I got for an early bday present. And I consider this to be cluttered on my part.

I had to resize because the original pic had a 1680x1050 resolution. I have a spiffy new monitor to go with the spiffy new computer (and no, sol...I am not mailing you my old flatscreen monitor! Wink Laughing out loud )

Aww baby, where's the love? Pretty please..? ^^

/me giggles :P

To paraphrase Chef on the show South Park
"Damn Solly, I just gave you sweet lovin' 5 minutes ago, you wanna kill me?!"

Hehe. I'll gladly kill you in a pvp game though. Wink

My desktop is actually quite easy to navigate, once you have been using it for a while, you just remember where everything is. Its like living in New York City. Laughing out loud

The only reason my desktop is capable of holding that much stuff is a 1920 x 1200 resolution, and reduced icon size. :P

Sharkull's picture

I just remember what folders I file things in... :P

I hate macs! Evil They are WAY to slow, and they cannot run many popular programs!

You should be ashamed of yourself. :x :bat:

//Mutters something about false accusations...

I remember an argument that broke out on irc a month or so ago about the merits of various operating systems. Me, I say to each their own. I guess that can apply to Macs vs pcs as well.

And ill get you both with a single spell! Cool

/me looks at the post of TAS, runs screaming into the night. Wink :P

So, not to brag or anything but this birthday computer is very cool. I can watch live TV and I can record programs on it and watch them at my leisure. We recorded Monk on the computer and watched the new season of Stargate on SciFi. Heh, I guess *someone* should have broken my laptop months ago!

Oh, yeah..that was the deal. My laptop got damaged (cracked screen and the cd/dvd drive door is broken, although the drive still works). I mean the computer was still operational BUT... So my Mark suggested getting a new one, on him. It is my early birthday present. Laughing out loud I have never received such an extravagant gift before in my life! This computer is just lots and lots of fun. It came with a cordless mouse and keyboard too, so I can still sit in my comfy chair, like I did with my laptop. And my health hasn't been so great so, I guess I deserve something nice....

I am hoping to get a new laptop for christmas...
http://secure.hypersonic-pc.com/scripts/custom_sys.aspx?sysid=Aviator_FX7

I shall put an AMD FX-60 in it. With two cores at 2.6 Ghz, and the option to easily overclock it, I already have over 5 combined Ghz of processing. //Oooh, i hope that new FX-62 is out by then for laptops....... Laughing out loud

Add in Duel DVD+RW drives and 2 GB of RAM (I am going to request for a custom 2GB dimm in one slot and 1GB in the other, see if i can get it to 3 GB)

Now just put on a "Fire Mist" paint job (its bright orange) and you have a screaming Gaming laptop that can beat most desktops (most). :P

Wishful thinking mate. :P

I am going to post in my blog with a similiar request:

Does anyone know about home networking? The computers are linked via a wireless network so we can share an internet connection. There are three computers in the work group but when I try to view them on my network places I get an error message saying access is denied, check with the administrator. Gee, I would but that is me!!! So we have a network with no file sharing...just sharing internet. Any ideas?

Open My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab > and check Simple File Sharing (no need for network wizard it only messes things up). Also there are some background services reguired for file sharing make sure there turned on, but I can't remember which ones.

To check Services, open run > type "services.msc" (only for XP Pro not Home edition)

Sharkull's picture

I'm a little rusty, but I used to be a M$ Networking guru... (MCSE). What do you want to do? Share files from your new PC? Access files shared on another machine? (Please specify operating system when talking about the older computers... I assume the new laptop has WinXP Home). A screenie of the error might help too.

BTW, "my network places" is just a listing of shared network resources... if you don't have any shares, then accessing the list will be meaningless.

Have you checked the encryption?

New desktop Windows XP media center editition v 2002 service pack2
other desktop one runs the same
My yearold semi-broken laptop runs Windows xp home not sure right this second about further details on that.

Sometimes we can see other computers in the work group ( I never can on this new one, but they can be viewed on the other 2. ) Hmm, I will try to come up with further details, thanks everyone. Smile

Templarian Arch Sorcerer's picture

The encryption could be blocking something. Do you have an active firewall? This could also conflict.

Sharkull's picture

You didn't answer my question of what you want to do... (just see the computer names?).

That's very bad news indeed... someone else is tapping in to your wireless network (could be accidental or malicious). Check your wireless router / switch for settings to enable encryption (WEP or WPA) to prevent other people from intruding on your connection / stealing your bandwidth (and / or possibly hacking into your machines).

aim4it,
The services required for browsing are: Workstation (the client for M$ file sharing...), and Computer Browser (for accessing the list of computers...), plus a common networking protocol (in this case, TCP/IP, so the NetBT service may be required too...).

Most common occurence for this error (in my experience at least) is that you don't actually have anything shared on the computer that you're trying to access, make sure you have a folder set for sharing then try accessing it.

ON one of the computers we can see the other 2 in the workgroup(we named them ) , NOT anybody outsde the network. We can share interent, we want to share files we have stored in the shared files folder but currently cannot. Zonealarm installed on all 3 comps, maybe that is the problem, not sure.

Find out how to get permission from the "server" in order to access shared files on other computers in our workgroup. That is the main problem, we keep getting an error message saying we need permission from the administrator ( we both have that status...)

List of servers unvailable--and path (to server) not found error message(s)

I am not sure how else to describe the problem.... We can share internet, all we want to do is share files we already have stored in the shared files folder. And we cannot.

I am going to read a tutorial on this problem that Lady_Femme gave me the link to and see if that helps me understand better the questions you are asking...and maybe the core problem as well. Thanks very much, I appreciate the help, but remember....I am smart in many things but computers are not my strong suit. Smile

Did you enable sharing on any folders on your new computer? Cause if you didn't it most likely won't show up.

To shared a folder right click on it > Properties > Sharing > Check Share this folder box

Templarian Arch Sorcerer's picture

ZoneAlarm likes to mess things up. Sometimes I have to shut ZA down to allow something to work. Cool

I don't have any Anti virus or soft firewalls installed, never have needed any av stuff, just know what your downloading. :P

here i dug up some home-networking articles on the micro$oft knowlege base site.

Internet firewalls can prevent browsing and file sharing <--- read this first!

How to troubleshoot home networking in Windows XP

How to configure file sharing in Windows XP

also, i think u didnt create/activate a guest user account on the computer you are trying to access, hence u get the access denied error msg when trying to browse the network.

hope this helps,
Femme

More tips for Kathy:
1. Set ZoneAlarm up with a trusted Zone for your workgroup computers (in the Firewall option, Zones tab...). Here's a pic of mine, and the address range for you may be different (per your router's DHCP settings).

You'll then (on the Program Control screen) need to give "Windows Explorer" client access to the Trusted zone, plus on the file server give "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" Server access to the Trusted zone (not the Internet Zone...).

2. File sharing also needs to be turned on, and the easiest way to find out how is to look at the Windows help for it... (Start - Help and Support).

Hope this helps...

He's on wellfare from me. I give him money every week as long as he keeps his minions making spells for Derelict, and around the circle goes.
