Motherboards, Video Cards and how they work with DS2

While moderating on Siege Mods I started a list of motherboards and video cards that will not work with DS2, that work with DS2 after hardware or software modifications and components that work with DS2 without issue. This data has been lost with Siege-Mods falling into the void. I will try to recreate it here, but I will need the help of everyone to do it.

If you would like to help me re-create this list PM or e-mail me with the following:

1. the system does or does not work with DS2
2. System Mfg and Model Number - If you or a friend built the system say so.
3. Motherboard Maker and Model (BIOS date and Northbridge/Southbridge chip set if known)
4. Video Card with Model Number, amount of memory and chip set [example - Nvidia FX5600 256MB]
5. Sound Card (if using onboard sound card what chip set is it)
6. System Memory Type and Size [example pc-3200 512 MB]
7. Windows XP Home or Professional Service Pack 1 or 2
8. are drivers and windows updates current, if not the date of the drivers you are using.

Thank You in Advance for your help.

Motherboards and Systems that have been tested with Dungeon Siege II

Test Configuration:
• ASUS (NVIDIA) FX5200 Video Card (on motherboards that are AGP 4/8X)
• Chaintech (NVIDIA) MX440 (on motherboards that are AGP 2X or PCI)
• For motherboards with integrated video the onboard video was used unless it was on the list of unsupported video from GPG or did not support at least 64MB of Video RAM.
• On-board sound was used in all cases unless the motherboard did not have this feature and in those cases a Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy Gamer was used.
• 512 MB of RAM was used in all cases and Memory speed was matched to the Processor FSB.
• All Systems were running either Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2.
• All windows updates were installed
• All Drivers where checked on the day of the test and updated to latest version if not current.
• System Antivirus Program was disabled prior to installing software and enabled after installation of game.
• System was not connected to internet.

Test Conditions.
1. Tests done in single player mode only
2. All systems tested to the completion of act one if possible.

I will list the motherboard Northbridge and Southbridge sets because it appears that the type of Northbridge chip in critical to the game working or failing. The Northbridge is the interface between the CPU, the AGP bus and is the motherboard’s AGP controller.

Most of the issues that I have seen are related to video and almost never to sound.

The Following Motherboards appear to work correctly with the game and were tested through all the main quests of act 1:

1. ASUS A7V600-X VIA KT600 Chip Set
2. ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Nvidia Nforce2-ST Chip Set
3. ASUS A7N8X-VM Nvidia Nforce2 – IGP Chip Set
4. ASUS A7V8X and 8X-X VIA KT400 Chip Set
5. Chaintech CT-SKT600 VIA KT600 –VT8237 Chip Set

Computers that board members have tested with DS2

From Balderstrom:
Well ya's asked so here ya go:
1. Works.
2. Self Built.
3. Mobo: Asus K8N-E Deluxe
4. GPU: Saphhire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
5. Sound: Onboard Nvidia nForce (soundstorm)
6. RAM: 1024 MB pc-3200 (Samsung)
7. OS: Windows 2000
8. Drivers: ATI (8.172.0.0, Catalyst: 5.9 - haven't gotten to the 5.10 yet. Should be fine.
8. All Nvidia/Chipset drivers updated to most recent releases, what was available as of Oct.2005

From Blondin235
1. It works perfectly.
2. Model: Novatech Vortex 530 Pro (see their website for full details..)
3. Mobo: Foxconn SiS661 800MHz FSB socket775 Chipset: SiS661FX
3a. CPU Intel Pentium 4 3.00Gb
4. GPU: Xpert Vision nVidia GeForce FX5500 AGP8x (256mb)
5. Sound: Onboard RealTek ac97
6. RAM: 1024mb (2x512mb/64) DDR-SDRAM PC3200U (Siemens)
7. OS: Windows XP Home SP2
8. Drivers: nVidia (official) 81.94. (..bang up-to-date!)
8a. All other drivers updated to most recent…

The Following Motherboards do not work until updated or additional hardware is installed:

1. E-Machines T2042 because even though the specifications state that the on-board video controller can be set for 64 MB of shared memory it only actually uses 31 MB of memory. The motherboard does not have an AGP Slot but you can install the following parts and get the game to run all be it very slowly.
A. PCI video card with 64 MB of RAM (make sure to verify that the PCI video card supports DirectX 9.0c and install the latest drivers)
B. Upgrade the memory from 128 MB PC2100 to at least 256 MB and if the system is running a P4 or Celeron of 2.0 GHz or faster use PC2700 RAM so the front side bus is not mismatched.

The Following Motherboards and Systems will not work with DS2. There are no modifications, updates or additional hardware that will correct the limitations.

1. Motherboards with the VT8231 chip
2. Motherboards with the KT133 and KX133 chipsets.
It should be noted that some systems that are running the KT133 and KX133 Southbridge chips may function if they are running with a AMD or Intel designed Northbridge chip, because from the reviews I have read this corrected the video issues with some Soyo and Chaintech boards running the KT133, KX133 and KT266 Southbridge chip from VIA

I will update this list as I collect new information.
