Internet changes

Very interesting reading:
Internet faces radical overhaul with rule changes
ICANN Expected to Widely Expand Domain Names

I wonder about the technical aspects of these changes. Will existing equipment / software need updates to accomodate the new characters in DNS names? How will foreign characters look when you don't have the appropriate fonts installed (and will they still work...)?

"If a non-Latin TLD is submitted, an English equivalent must also be submitted, according to the proposal. "

There's already a scheme for encoding non-latin URI's http://xml.coverpages.org/draft-duerst-iri-09.txt which includes a way to map between the two forms, but this is still at draft ststus.

IPv6 will be more of an impact.
