What are dir.lqd files

I have a question, two actually .... Does anyone know what the DIR.LQD files do, and are they redundant and unused in a finished and tanked map? I could be wrong, but they only seem to do anything when you're useing the editor, and they do sometimes cause problems. I have run the same maps both with and without the LQD files, and haven't seen any difference. In fact, if there a conflict between the GAS and LQD files, the map runs better without them. as far as I know the lqd files are only there to speed up loading process...most people's mods don't add them from what I have seen, they make the file bigger...with todays quad cores etc I don't think the time saved difference will be really noticeable, maybe back in the xp days with slow computers they make a difference.
The LQD files where there to help the files load faster. However I have not seen where they help since Windows 98SE. You could say they are a holdover from long ago in an operating system far far away.
Thanks for that Darkelf and bare_elf
I will now not include the LQD files in tanked maps. The editor however is a different story, as it automatically makes the files. After making map changes in the editor I routinely delete the associated lqd file, to avoid conflict problems with GAS files. I tend to build large regions, and even with an up to date machine, and 8gb of ram, regions can take a lot longer to load without the file (possibly because it's being rebuilt). It can take 2 or more reloads of the region before it speeds up.
(Don't know how the references to Motherboards and The completed Quest ended up in my origional post, I didn't intend to include them)
