My broken hip

I'm back, I've just spent 14 days in hospital after falling downstairs and breaking my left hip, and it still bloody hurts let me tell you. |(. Its called a Hemiarthroplasty, I looked at the know it all medical staff in bemusement after that announcement and said "will I be able to go home tomorrow then or what" stifled laughter and a display of I've been given strict orders to stay indoors and take it easy for the next 4 to five weeks or I'll be back in hospital having it fixed again. forums: |

Wow Moros, so sorry about your troubles.
I was quite sick several years ago and it really sucked having to sit around most of the day, just boring and restless. The staff at the convalescent place I was at got me a walker and a cane so I could walk a little and I really started looking forward to those walks, even though I was limited to 5 minutes.
Four or five weeks seems sooo damn long and overwhelming (well, I felt over whelmed, don't know about you). Hopefully, you will be able to get moving about soon, little by little...and hey, maybe even get a walker of your own!

So going out with the crutches and a skateboard isn't approved?
Crutches are so 2015. All the cool convalescents are using walkers. And canes. Don't forget the canes.

Both myself and one of my cats have had a Hemiarthroplasty of the left hip. It does get better, but keep a can of 3-in-1 oil around for the squeaks.

I've Bought an exercise bike as my leg muscles have wasted away, I bought a DKN AM-E Exercise Bike, I don't know if it will do any good but I've got to get these legs back to normal as walking around the house with a walker isn't cutting the mustard.
I'm still not allowed beyond the garden gate as my beautiful asian doctor wants me to take it steady for another 2 weeks and she says the exercise bike is a great idea as long as I don't over do things. I reckon 2 or 3 miles a day should do the trick, ahhhh I nearly forgot to post a pic of the bike, it looks a beauty, lets see if it works as good as it looks.

The good thing about cycling is that it keeps your knees straight, so you don't have issues with the various ligaments that can be a problem in general sports. That also means the hip motion is consistent, and in the same direction. Make sure the saddle is comfortable, or you'll be squirming around on it, and that's not good for the hips.
The exercise bike you purchased is a good one. however the saddle (seat) is not very good. If you can get to a bike store I would suggest you get you butt measured for the proper width of saddle and then purchase one without to much padding. As over padded saddles can cause your hips to twist and that is not good for what you are trying to do. Your doctor is correct to limit the time you ride. I would suggest no more than 2 or 3 miles a day broken up into several short rides of about 15 to 20 minutes each and go slowly keeping both your legs together and not bowed out at the knees. Increase the mileage a bit about every two weeks.
