Guest Posting Disabled
Submitted by Strider978 on Mon, 2006-09-04 11:48 | ||
Due to the numerous spam bots currently ravishing the forums, we've made an executive decision to remove guest posting, I do sincerely apologize for the inconvenience but encourage our long time guest posters to log in now, as it only takes 10 seconds and it will save the appearance of our boards. We are in the process of updating our software and at that time we may re-examine the issue but for now to stop the torrents of spam flowing in, guest posting is disabled. Sorry for the inconvenience. forums: |

Thank you.
I think that is a very wise decision. Just wondering about one thing.... will guests still be able to view and search the forums. I think that if they can see the content of this site then they are more likely to register. Just a thought :2cents:
Guests can still view and read, they just will not be able to start new topics, or reply to existing topics.
i'll remember to log in from now on
message received and made of wood
I'll log in now and then, then..
- navigating the newly sited site seems a lot easier now..
It should cut spam bots, though some do create a user and then post. I dont know what they do but I have seen it on multiple forums that they have done it.
Knock on wood.
I thought quest posting was disabled?
But a guest spambot just posted a link...
Deleted.
firebat, yes something seems to be wrong but it will be taken care of shortly.
Still does not seem it has taken hold.
{snipped link, since I deleted that post it referred to}
K.
Ok, thanks.
I know I am not alone in reading all new posts when I log in, so I did see that one and deleted it, as I did the one that I saw around 2AM before I went to bed. I think we need a watchdog!
Shall I nominate Dillon? :P
Woof woof!
I can bark! :P
I am switching platform as soon as the domain transfer has properly propagated so we won't have to worry about this security bug that apparently lets some bot post as a guest.
No content except for posts in the shoutbox will be lost. And the new site will have pretty much all current features and more.
Hey Shocked, consider yourself nominated.... Are you gonna say "woof" now? :P
..but who's going to watch Shocked..?? 8O
True, he if anyone needs to be watched. ^_^
Blondin's ghost will not be able to speak with this guest silencer....
He was such a funny person.... :P
True, but maybe we can get Blondin235 to fill in the gaps.
*poke poke*
8O Now I'm confused. Is this all about guest posting or ghost pesting?
*cough* Yes, we have been meandering a bit.
Actually disabling guest posting seems to have really cut down on the stupid spambots. I am sorry for the flesh and blood guests who may like to post a question or a comment, but registration is free and comes with no other obligation except to follow site rules.
'twas a ghostly guest who suggested this - 6 months ago..
..heh, heh!

Update:
Guest posting is re-enabled, but on the new site it is handled differently. Guest comments are not immediately visible when posted... they need to be approved by site staff first.
Very good idea.
I just deleted 10 SPAM guest posts with only a couple clicks, and nobody (but site staff) saw them first.
^^
Yea. we are really popular among the bots. ^^
