Mod form (heheh) from China

LoneKnight's picture

Okay, the old school Dungeon Siegers...what am I thinking, everyone at SiegeTheDay, must remember that 'ole thread at Siege Network called "Mod form China". It was a mod that was created, apparently in the Chinese DS community. It contained some pretty amazing things.

Amazing. I found a copy of this rare mod at Sjr's Abstraction site, but I am wondering if anyone knows if anything else was ever released, as that version is incomplete. Anyone ever hear of a source, or more advanced versions being released?
Amazing stuff for DS1. Truely amazing.

"the girl has 22000 polys"

Too many polys Sad . I recall the mod, not sure if they optimized the geometry, but that is too high. Does it have any email contat? It may have interesting content to use. I think it said it had a 4k dragon which is low enough.

Edit: Lol, my post is just after yours in the thread. 2 years ago!

I downloaded awhile ago, and never saw any contact information about the author. There are a few characters in the mod, do you mean the one that flys Wyvante? They all seem like they make my game lag a bit when I use them, that must be the poly thing correct?

Which ever character model or models uses 22,000 polys or around that range. That is an outrageous amount for a character model and DS1 is not a cutting edge engine. That'd lag modern engines as well or be a poor use of their budget. I think some community members wanted to help optmize it and might have done so. I doubt they could optmize 22,000 polys effectively. I think farmgirl is under 2,000 polys. That can be pushed a bit but not that much. I don't recall the mod much. I did not keep an eye on it due to the high poly use. I thought it looked pretty though. I suspect there is other work that might have been done properly. Too bad there is no email or source from the mod. A 4k dragon does not sound bad at all. Do you have a pic of him Kathy? I don't recall what it looked like.

I believe farmgirl was under 500 polys (maybe 700 in DS2). 2000 is OK for a singleton boss monster (e.g. Valdis) but farmgirl is re-used for female NPC's so you get multiple instances in use at the same time. 22,000 would be a reasonable budget for the entire scene for real-time motion on the systems DS1 supported, so blowing it all on one figure would be crazy.

I'd need to check the count, but the Lara Croft model in the latest (Legend) in that series was around 2000, because in that game you generally only have one character active most of the time. A 20,000 poly version was apparently used for pre-recorded cut scenes (i.e. where the rendering could be done as slowly as they liked, because it was done in advance and then the result shipped as a movie). That model also had both bone and morph animations aapplied, so she could use facial expressions and talk. I don't recall if the in-game model used morphs.

DS doesn't use many movies, NIS's are as real-time as the rest of the game, and play out with the cast the player provides, typically involving up to a dozen player party and monster models at once. It's also interesting to note that the latest talking characters have facial bones, as the engine doesn't support morph target animation. They have a few extra polys around the mouth, but not a significant increase.

No, no pic of him. The only way I could figure out how to use the mod at all was as a very fancy character mod. There are about 5 "starting" characters to play with and when shopping you can get some of the armor, spells and weapons made for the mod. I say "starting" loosely because the character's stats and skills are extremely advanced for the most part...and made very oddly. One character has no mana at all...like 0 so forget casting spells with her. I think those would be things also to correct if anybody was to undertake such a thing.(which I assume not).

Hehe Smile Here's your dragon, Wyv. As I said, amazing.

That was my image I posted long ago. It is easy to tell it is mine, keke, the gui gives it away.

And Kathy, btw, I have taken several things from the mod and would like to use them. In fact I have created 128 new npc's of which about 120 are from this mod, modified mostly though a couple would be as is except maybe for the pointy ears. Tongue I have been a bit lazy in actually integrating them in but if there is ever a newer beta version of Abstraction you will see a fair bit of this mods content, as there is a bunch of stuff in it that does not show up using it as a mod.

From the little I did talk to the maker of it I gathered he was making a siegelet out of it and said he had about 40% of the map made. I suspect he may have many issues connecting to outside of China locations and who knows if he was still working on this or got anything further made.

That sounds neat sjr. This mod has so much potential (I really like that flying girl! Not only because she can fly but she has nice hair, has an interesting way of wearing armor (a little too "interesting" for some of the armors IMO :P) and the weapons and spells are truly wondererful. The author has great creativity.

My mistake I was thinking UT2004 character budget ghastley. I forgot how low-poly the characters are in DS. Damn LK, that is a very nice dragon! I think the 4k tris count is worth it. I could really use that guy =/ . Did the author mention anything about his work being used else where SJR? I'd love to recycle that dragon at the very least. Obviously I'm wondering if it is ok to use work from this mod with proper credit of course.

Wyv, the only copy in rotation I can find anywhere is at Abstraction's. I have no idea what sort of state the Chinese community is in, nor where to find it. And, no, the author never really mentioned it being used anywhere else. From what I surmise, it was a WIP kinda project, as the creator would add a map and stuff as he/she went, but no idea of what became of it. Perhaps it was incorporated into some Chinese siegelet? I have certainly heard no more on that matter.

Yeah, as Sjr said, there's more than just a few characters in the mod. I checked and I belive some Chinese-themed nodes are in it as well but I haven't verified. There are some weapon and armor sets, along with some Chinese-oriented music.

Sjr, how did you change the models? I tried looking at them but they were heavily encoded.

I found the mod, but I can't attach it here. You can only down it through the webarchive. Taking some notes of interesting items, then perhaps archiving the mod in somewhere easier to access. Somewhere live.
