I don't play any games over the internet. I expect to be able to play on an unconnected machine - their example of playing on a plane is a good one. I don't want that open port to a server that might decide to "update" my game to one that doesn't work any more, because it's incompatible with my mods.
And without mods, I'm not so interested in that game in the first place. An online-only game is not going to allow mods, because you'd never be able to test them without your own server, which they'd never allow because it would break the service model.
