Game and Simulation Design sounds fun. And it is good that you have other options to fall back on if this one doesn't fit. I'm probably going into game design myself but more the interaction part though. It seems like an interesting industry to work in.

Taking up programming is a very good idea, if nothing else just to understand how it works and to be able to use it as a tool.
