crash on loading character save

Setup So i tried to install SP3 for my XP3. True to the microsoft standards, the upgrade trashed my windows. I had to reinstall windows and eveything, including dungeon siege. I put in the usual mods for DS, as well as my old character saves from a backup. Problem Ran dungeon siege. crashed on loading old character. Tried it again. Same. Rebooted. Tried it again. Same. Made a new character. saved new character. Exited game. Loaded the just-created character. No problems. Actual Question So, I guess I need a "just load the damn character and keep running" utility or a "fix game save file" utility. If such a utility exists, what would it be called and where could I find it? Thanks in advance. forums: |

Make sure the old save file is not set to be "Read only" (sometimes automatically set when backing up to / restoring from CD's) in the file properties.
Protections are fine, all r/w.
I played around and it gets strange: some of my other saves from older characters load fine. looks like just this character is corrupt. Bummer, as this one had been going through the single player version of Utraen Peninsula and that had been taking a while.
You could try to load the save file into DSMod / DSLOAMod... they are more fault tolerant than the retail exe's.
I was confused at first, but then I googled and found that DSMod is part of the editor, which I had downloaded a while ago but never really gotten into. So I installed that, saw the mod.exe, ran it.
That was interesting, a lot of text and brand new error messages (which if are to be believed, indicate that elfgirl conflicts with itself), but eventually, the same end. Crash without explanation.
More interesting, it seems I can load evey file from my old characters, but all three saves of this one character fail. This would seem to indicate missing plugin, but that's nonsensical, as all my characters use the same set of plugins.
Unless there is some sort of character editor/cleaner, it's looking like that character is just toast
Thanks for the replies.
If it is an LoU elf, make sure you installed the extra dsres file...
Otherwise, I am out of ideas.
installing that extra file didn't help.
I did find the fix, though. I put in the Toria Complete mod. Suddenly, I could load my character. even though my character is a Ultrean Peninsula character and not a Toria character.
After a quick look I see that Torian Cronicles modifies heroes.gas (this is not a map specific file), so that would explain it.
