Dual-Core / Quad-Core CPU's not enough power for you?

Well, if that's the case then it seems that Intel is working on something you might be interested in... How does an 80-Core chip sound! Yeah, I know it's just a research chip (and won't be ready for retail production for a couple years) but just the concept sure does sound sweet. forums: |

Ei-ei-eighty?
Scaling for symmetric multi-processing is non-linear and I would have thought that they would never get anywhere near that for PC processors, but part of the research they're doing is in combining different specialised cores on one die. So your GPU, CPU, FPU and any other kind of PU would all end up as just cores of one chip. Microsoft are assuming all the current functionality of sound cards, video cards etc. will be in the one chip soon, and your PC will probably be built into your cell phone by then!
The article makes it appear they have a parallel-processing application for this one.

My question is whether they will be able to fully untilize the multi-core processing potential for single-threaded applications... Implementing that function within the chip / chipset would be fantastic (as opposed to leaving such control up to the O/S (/me shudders to think of how unstable MS's code would be for this... if they even tried).
...and yes LK, eighty.

/me adjusts his equation of core increase prediction from X^2 to X^3....well maybe not that linear, but still...
