Highly Frustrating XP mods

(Hey look, a dungeon siege forum that didn't die 3 years ago, hooray!)

So..was able to get DS 1/2/3 for $5. Oh, the nostalgia.

Went to grab some mods, took some digging but I found the ones I wanted. Put them in (Cat mansion - which was later switch out for elves, inventory mod, cosmetic effects, DSX in - meh, DSX removed, Atomic Spells pack, the dll that lets you adjust the camera)...thing were moving frustratingly slow. Put in a low multiplier (x10) XP mod.....no difference.

Exchanged for a high multiplier (x1000000).....no difference. Okay, so their is obviously a conflict....Remove all mods but massive XP mod.....no difference. Try different massive xp mod....no difference. Remove camera dll... no difference. Replace camera dll... camera adjustment options apparently gone. (Note: A new game was started after each adjustment.)

So now I have no idea what is going on. The general thought is maybe a clean install, but this was off steam, and my internet here is terrible. I'd rather not if I can avoid it. My only other idea is maybe my trying out different mods messed up a configuration file somewhere.

If so, where could it be, that I may delete it and start anew, without reinstalling the game? Or does someone know what's really going wrong?

I'd ask the Steam community, but I doubt I'd get a good answer. I need to ask a modding community, and this is the only one I can tell that people are still talking on.

Cheers,
Werewood

Hi Werewood and welcome to Siege the Day. First let me say it is nice to see you.
Several people who have purchased the Dungeon Siege Games from Steam have been running into problems with some of the mods not working correctly. A Cat Mansion Fan how very very nice. It would be useful to the community here if you could provide a little more detail about your problem.
1. Is it DS1 or LoA that you are playing?
2. What operating System are you using?
3. The exact mods you are using (mod title, revision for each)
4. Where the mods are installed DS1 resources or DSLoA folder

I am currently running the following setup for DSLoA
DS1 Resources
Kane's XP Rings.dsres (exp mod)
SNPC_LoA.dsres (a mod for summoning NPCs into maps that have no hireable characters)
And about 15 others that are the resources of maps I play
DSLoA Folder
seefarLOA.dsres
Legends of Utrae.dsres 3.2
Cat Mansion Adepts.dsres (my own custom version there is a standard version on the site here which adds additional armor,ranged weapons and other things)
LOA_Cat-Glasses_v1.dsres (it adds sun glasses to the characters)
Adepts_Cat-Glasses_v1.dsres glasses specific to adepts
Now I have been running this configuration for years and all works well.

Over the years I have been playing and modding the games I have tried various exp mods and found that Kane's Rings works best for me as it does not appear to conflict with any other mod.

Elf

Heya!

To answer:
1) This is actually kinda hard to answer. I bought the "Complete Pack", but there is some disagreement as to whether "LOA" is included. Some people swear it is, but I see no signs of it in my game. That and the fact that DS1 is 1gb and LOA w/ DS1 is 1.5gb. The Steam download is listed as 1gb. So I been grabbing mods meant for DS1 only. (Me-thinks Steam lied about the overall "complete" status, grrrrrr)

2) Windows 7 x64 (tried compatibility mods XP SP2, and XP SP3)

3) Atomix SFX/Spells pack
Zhixaloms Inventory (the largest [255] for DS 1 WITHOUT Aranna). I actually tried to uses the aranna version and things went really screwy.
Dark/Light Elves (Cat Mansion is shelved for the time being. I felt a bit overpowered as soon as I looted the shuriken. And got weirded out when I found the Staff made of a flower, with roots, grass and all. Not sure its working right either, some people aren't "converted".)
Monster Weapons
Less Screen Shaking for Spells (l_no_shake.dres)
Trying to get Virpyre's Balance mod to work.

Using ikkyo_loa.dsdll from the Cat mansion zip. Thats the only one that seemed to work, though it doesn't anymore. though I know I probably should be using ikkyo_ds.dsdll

4)Program Files (x86) / Steam / steamapps / common / Dungeon Siege 1 / Resources.

Tried DSX and Dungeon Siege Revived, but there seemed to be conflicts with the above mods. Having a STR req 90 item drop off the first Krug seemed like it shouldn't happen.

As mentioned before, I've even tried removing all other mods except Virpyre's. I can get the 55/55 hp, 55/55 mp promised, but no alterations to XP gain.

SIDE NOTE: Say, does the Cat Mansion Add-on have regular reading glasses, or are they all sunglassed? I was using the large Cat Mansion pack, Maybe I'll use Adepts instead.

I may have to use Kane's XP rings, though I loathe to give up even a single equipment slot. Guess I shouldn't complain. :P

Put Kane's rings mod in and then start a game and once the map loads press the enter key and type in the conversation window that opens +faertehbadgar you will get a bunch of basic armor but if you do it enough times you will end up getting several of Kane's High order rings. Then you can go off kill a few things and boost yourself to level 150 in all four skills in less than 10 minutes for each character. then sell the rings pocket the money and move on. I do not really see it as an issue myself. I just edit the character's gas file so that they have the rings to start with if you do that for all the heroes and hire-able npcs as well you are good to go. While you are at it you could give them high order weapons and armor in their inventories s so long as you do not remove them prior to the exp mod boosting their skills they will function as if the character was really of high order. But then either of those paths would be cheating in a way so keep it to single player games :P

Well good news: I dug around my old CDs and found my ancient copy of LOA! So that part is no longer in question (and DS 2/3 for $5 is still good).

The method you described above was a tad different from how I was planning on playing, where I gain levels quickly, but not too quickly over the process of the entire campaign. (which is why I initially started with the x10) And then, when I am a high level, I feel super powered. Still cheating, obviously, but I like to see my progression a bit.

But now that I got LOA installed, I wanna test it and see how it works with the other mods. If not, Kane's Rings it is.

I can also grab Adepts now, since it is LOA.

(Nope, the XP mod still does nothing. Kane's rings it is, I guess)

Edit: Wait, are the multiplications like percentages?

I tried the x10 ring and nothing happened (apparently)....the X1,000,000 ring worked...too well...

And the x100 ring got me to ding the next level in half the distance as the previous... like it was more of a X2 ring.

I guess that makes sense....gonna test the X100 mod just to check. (nope, no luck) if it doesn't work, I am somewhat happy with the x100 ring.

Something I just read on another forum, while researching the issue:
"I don't think any XP mod will work in singleplayer because none of them actually goes into the monster's template and make them give more experience."

So I guess I have to use the rings.

Great that you found LoA and have it installed, make sure you have all the updates for DS1 installed also.
I hope you have fun with Adepts and for a really fun time you might wish to get Legends of Utrae also. Iryan and I worked a great deal to get both working.

Yes the experience gain is more of a percentage than it is a multiplier at least with the rings. I have also noted that the exp gain appears to happen faster as the character grows in strength and intel

Elf

i believe the problem of slow exp gain even with exp mods can be caused by the exp limiter in formulas.gas. it shud look something like this:

Quote:
// experience_limiter

[experience_limiting_factors]
{
first_level = 0.10;
later_levels = 0.025;
}

in ds2, the variables "first_level" and "later_levels" appear to be commented out thus removing the exp limiter.

if that formulas.gas file appears as above in the mod or if it is unmodified, u can try changing the exp limits to gain exp and thus lvls faster.
