The great post count debate

Well, instead of debating this issue in the shoutbox, here is a thread to express our opinions regarding this subject.

My opinion is this:

I have made some (in my opinion) useful posts containing info regarding new mods, and some others trying to help a few people with questions. A lot of my postcount is off-topic stuff, that to me, is fun and fun alone. That postcount does not make me "knowledgeable", it means simply that I like to have fun.

So...what is the opinion of others?

Post count is really not an issue with me because I never look at it. However some people think it is a game where the higer post count wins, guess that comes from being a gamer.
The post count is not a game to win. The value of what a person says is not in the number of posts but the content of the posts. I tend to read all the new posts whenever I come here. Over time I have learned who I value the opinion of and like the content of in the non-off-topic areas and read those.
Being the technical elf I read all the tech support stuff no matter what it is or who wrote it.
I read all the off topic posts because everyone needs a good giggle.
Half the time I do not even look at who did the writing or how large the post count of that person is.

So to make this long comment short put it there or take it out does not bother me.

the elf climbs down off her soap box, folds the step ladder and soap box into her back pack and walks off into the forum.

I think it is important, because someone may want to know, and it also gives an idea of how long a person has been at a forum. :P

The join date tells when someone joined. Also you can always click to view all posts by a member. Then you can read all their posts if you really want to. I dont want to but you have the option.

I get annoyed when people post only saying about three or so words in their posts. Why bother posting if you don't have anything to say :?:

Ok, so I think I need to chime in on this debate. This site was started on July 21, 2005. I was here the next day, so I guess you could say I am among the "original" members. I am not tooting my own horn by any means so hear me out before you get all huffy and puffy. I have been here "lurking" since the beginning. Even when I didn't have internet I would check in whenever I could. But if you notice I have a mere 18 posts (well 19 counting this one). Some people may say that it is because I have nothing to say but that is not true. If you know me you know that I always have something to say. My post count is so low because there is always someone else who can say it much better. For me post count is just a number that means nothing. If the post is interesting and not just spam it means more to me. And if you are just repeating something someone else already said it is pointless. I guess put it this way....I would rather be remembered for being a nice person who can occasionally help someone than a the person with the most posts on a board. I am technically challenged so I am no help when it comes to that stuff, but if you have a life problem then I am more than willing to try and help you figure it out. But hey that is just me. Laughing out loud

Actually, sara, you were one of the people I was thinkiing about when I started this thread. I know that you don't post here very often, but you have been here a lot longer than most (including me) And I know you are a smart lady who may "say" things better than perhaps you give yourself credit for.

Also, I can think of several very talented modders who do not have high post counts and one would be foolish to discount the knowledge that they have.

So, I think the general consensus is--postcount is a non-issue to most. I am not knocking those whose opinions differ, but only to offer different perspectives.

Ill admit that i was refering to myself with being both a knowledgeable modder, and frequent poster.

- we guests (- and ghosts!) don't have a problem with post counts.. Cool

And I shall cast a resurrection spell on you, blondin. Wink

eek!
/me dives in bushes!! 8O

But it is the souped up version of the "Full Resurrection" spell that restores you to full health and mana, even if the caster is not a level 40 nature mage. Wink

You know it is funny. I was looking at another forum where I spend alot of time and I joined there in April. My postcount there is over 1100. I actually thought about how I managed to do that, and then I noticed that one of the people I am friendly with joined within a few days as me, and his post count is around the 2500 mark. That is a lot!

So I thought about some of what I was posting and well, a great deal of it was wishing people happy birthday, some chatty stuff and forum games. I did post some of my writing and actually discussed some serious (and not so serious) literarary works, so I am not totally goofing off. I guess I really am a "chatty kathy"

I think this issue boils down to this: enjoy StheD, be friendly and courteous, and if you stay within forum rules, post about whatever you like. Then there are no worries about postcount, right? Smile

My case if very similar to Sara's here, except I was here before even this version of the site was created and I only have 43 posts, but that doesn't make me any less knowledgable, or show that I've been here well over forever. My post count has in fact been reset 3 times because of the frequent uptimes and downtimes of SD.org, but I didn't complain about it because it really doesn't show anything except how much you have to say. Which shows you that I have very little to say from time to time, and I only post where I think I can contribute to the thread.

Well spoken Shocked my friend. Like Shocked I was here before this version of Siege the Day was born. I have a relatively low post count because I speak when I have something to say in the Game related forums where my comment may fix a problem or direct someone to an answer. If I was concerned about my post count then I would babble in all the forums just because I can.

What Kathy says is correct also:

Well, if I were you - I'd be Shocked.. 8O ha, ha!

I've always loved the expression..
"A wise man will hold his tongue while a fool will open his mouth and trip over his own."

Anyways, I might have the lowest post count of one of the "original StheD" members. Mostly because I've gotten used to talking with everyone here on mIRC, which I usually leave on constantly.

PS. tales of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Hi Cappy.

Don't strain yourself posting, we want you to be injury free. Laughing out loud :P

Post count tells you how many posts a person has... but nothing about what is in them. Trolling, SPAM and treating a forum like a chat room can increase post count quite quickly and tells a distinct story about the poster... while friendly posts offering encouragement, assistance or a harmless joke tells a rather different story.

Post quality matters much more to me than quantity... absolutely. Posting for the sole purpose of post count pumping is completely lame (IMO perpetrators should seek professional psychological help).
