I use paint.net too, along with a few other image editing programs. It is a really great program with lots of plug ins and cool features. It supports .psd files, which is very handy. It is pretty fun to use and maybe even a little addictive...
Not meaning to high jack your blog, garthagain, but I had a couple of things to add...
I also use Photofiltre 7 which is great for layering images together and supports alpha channels. There are plugins available, but much of the information and the forums are in French. They do have a sub-forum for English speakers, as well as some documentation in English. There is a large selection of language plug ins if English or French is not your primary language. They have a premium program as well, Photofiltre 10 which is free to try out for 30 days.
You guys are going to think I am a weirdo (just in case you didn't already) but Tux Paint for kids is a surprisingly fun (and relaxing) program for adults or at least for this adult. It has some cool little features and you can make your own brushes (even animated ones) if you want.

The Gimp is a pretty classic program.
