Creative muse, whither art thou? |

I find it amazing (and humbling) to see how many superb third-party (i.e., "non-professional") mods and new maps are out there for Dungeons Siege (in all its variations). Some of them are straight up full blown games in themselves, worthy of commercial status. Clearly, there are very skilled and knowledgeable people in this community. At the same time, though, I'm also a bit disheartened to pitch into the fray, so low are my current skills and knowledge. Not that I want to compete, nor do I care to compare myself against seasoned modders, but looking at what I've produced so far is underwhelming to say the least. Besides, when searching for a new idea for a map/region, I can't help but think "What's the point, it's all been done already, and better than I could (given my current skills)!". That said, I feel the same way about other endeavours, creative writing chief amongst them. "Polti's 36 Plots" or "The 14 Master Plots" or some such smartly confirm that "it's all been done". But the response to this (and the saving grace) is that while the basic premise is rehashed, the uniqueness is in the (story) telling and the presentation. In the end, I'm convinced that the fun is in the doing, in the journey, not in the final destination (final product). At least, that's how I see it. blogs: |
