Thank You, Again and Again and Again!

First, Thank you Iryan for your insight into what breaks mods. Based on that, I tested each .dsres one at a time, in order of complexity, until I replicated the error. SM_Krug_AI, again! Smile

It seems I'm pushing these invaders too far, and I'm betting it's my tinkering with their [mind]'s which is breaking things. Last time I was having an error, there was an extraneous semicolon after a jat_brain I'd added a new string to.

Simple stuff with huge consequences is what makes debugging and such so frustrating. BUT, I wasn't using skritpad, which I am now, along with the item template creator which has code check. I'm sure there are tools and tools, and I'm building a set myself now finally.

Necessity, as the Mother of invention, will often nag at you for not having brought enough tools to the job. I learned that with patience and perseverance (and sleep), I can find or make the tools I need to proceed with any project in front of me. Perhaps finding answers is such a good feeling for the contrast it casts on confusion? Or maybe I should sleep again...

Didn't end up sleeping much, but I also didn't go back to modding before bed. I played Hearthstone and watched a movie about spies. What a relief this morning to wake up and know what I'll be working on today!

I awoke refreshed, sure in my theory that Krug_AI.dsres didn't need most of the edits I'd made, because edits to templates.gas and formulas.gas have already taken care of the big stuff.

Incremental changes and tiers of priority are my lessons for the day, and I'll be paying closer attention to what breaks and why. I find myself needing to curb my enthusiasm when I'm editing based on playtest notes. The notes fill a page a day so far, but some of the changes I want to make can break the game if I'm wrong or not careful. I learned from messing with Krug in the Siege Editor, that there are conventions of Sight Range and Com Distance that I wasn't following. I learned that all of the possible and relevant changes to [actor_evil] Child Templates, are listed in the Object Properties Menu. And finally, I think I've learned a few ways to make the tools I'm using work together more efficiently. Even things like, shortcuts IN the folders I frequent, TO the folders I frequent, Reference Material Links, and Tools for examining game files.

If you are modding or interested in modding Dungeon Siege, and you haven't bookmarked This Google Drive Page, then it's time to. Please also, I think it would help Modding in general to have this kind of treasure trove become common knowledge, so... Spread the word! Smile
