Any tips for a novice?

I've never played much of DS2. In fact , I've never gotten past the first act. After wrestling with the installation a few times, I finally got everything in and patched.

I couldn't resist harassing one of the Morden soldiers.

I also got the DS1 to DS2 map files up and running. Here we are exploring the spooky storage cave...and I'm not too proud to say one of those Yeti looking things almost kicked my ass. I had to keep kiting them around and it was a good thing Jondar had heals. It felt like WoW..."HAEL MEH U NOOB!!" :silly:

Kathy first thing I should say is when you are playing DS2 it is a very good idea to pick up the mod called 6Slots.ds2res which allows you to buy six party member slots, because let me tell you it can be a pain having to go back for characters that are quest related like both half-giants, Taar and Eva to name a few. once you have the mod installed any inn keeper will allow you to increase your party to 6 members for a pile of coin. It is also good to have a mixed party I use mostly rangers that are also combat and/or nature magic users. If you can not find the 6slot mod let me know via email and I will get it to you. Note the ranged weapons for DS2 suck because of limited range, find a bow you like, mod it to increase the range to at minimum from 10 to 30 meters. Remember when playing the DS1 maps that have been converted to DS2 the monsters level up to whatever your average party member is. For example if you have a ranger of say level 36 most monsters will be level 38. Some monsters are also resistant to both melee and ranged weapons so make sure to carry lots of health potions and mana potions and be prepared to retreat. As some things like the Skeleton Mages and Rangers are very slow to die and tend to run in packs. I see you are using a Cat Mansion Character Smile

Your to busy techie to get the files, 80% are on your server, 5% are part of DS1 which you have, the remaining files you can download quickly, how many computers do you have hehe. I am so busy that I have not had a chance to visit IRC in 3 weeks!

The whole process from downloading to un-tanking/re-tanking took me about 30 minutes. Installing DS2 took much longer since I kept getting errors at 16-17% of the installation process.

Lili, thanks for the tips. I will have a look around the site and see if I can find that mod you spoke of. If I can't find it, I will let you know via email. Smile

well kathy u got much further than i did, i am still confused on what files i need to retank.

Hm, un-tanking/re-tanking? - I hope you didn't mean this literally!?
Resp. did you use this simple batch tool? - It seems to work better than originally thought...

Also I hope the installation matters are gone meanwhile!?

'Real retanking' would be the hardest way (please see the post above), hopefully that's not needed.
Currently the file to convert are:
- Objects.dsres
- Sound.dsres
- Voices.dsres
- ExpVoices.dsres (from LoA, if you have)

*cough*, 30m range... - no idea how extended that mod is, but if you can get (enjoy?) this range basically then DS2 probably won't leave a balanced gameplay impression.
Generally DS2 is a game where many ranges are kept rather short, specially if you compare these ranges with the sight range the player may get when using camera mods or similar.

Well, I don't want to be a moralizer, but an ammo range of 30m would 'confuse' the balancing and the AI in a few aspects, for example monsters become regrettable creatures as blind/dull/unperceptive as they are, also as player you always had to play in 'mirror' mode to show your party members there the monsters are.
...and I could imagine that the mages in your party 'become jealous' since they can't throw an ice/fire ball so far, and that melee members will be annoyed since they become jobless because most monsters will be dead before they can reach them. :o

Beside of this there is the 'Far Shot' skill to reach up to 20m regularly - which is already pretty far as simple and short-sighted the AI in DS2 is.
Actually I've made once a 'Sharpshooter' buff with a ~10m range bonus depending on skills/classes, but even after some revisions/complaints this buff probably still isn't as balanced as it perhaps should be...

Indeed it should be the other way around, if you are level 38 then the monsters should be level 36 - at least that's how the defaults should work in the Level Adjustment mod.
Generally this mod was intended as auxiliary tuning as long as the monster levels aren't assigned manually for each region.

Iryan told me once that he was experimenting with fixed levels (or level ranges) for the DS1=>DS2 ported maps. Sadly it is a painful work to assign the monster levels in a satisfying manner to provide challenging and gapless levelling.
Concerning some unbalanced values for resistances or attack speed, i've think this should be fixed meanwhile.

Yes, thanks, the base Dungeon Siege 2 game is up and running fine although I had to install it on another computer and copy over the terrain file. I had no problems whatsoever installing and running Broken World, though, so yay. Laughing out loud

I did mean tanking/untanking literally. Is that a bad thing? :nervous: I've already started 3 games and have been playing problem free thus far. Kingdom of Ehb, Yesterhaven and Legends of Aranna. No Utraean Peninsula as I am already playing a campaign of that in Dungeon Siege 1.

I've not gotten as far as I would like with any of the games due to having been sick with some nasty stomach thing.

I followed Iryan's instructions here for the Legends of Aranna stuff:

I also read your blog entry regarding updating the files via hex editor and/or tanking...

KillerGremal wrote:
Of course it's also possible to un-tank the DS1 tank and to re-tank it again for DS2. This probably takes more time but makes sense if you have to update the DS1 content first to work in DS2.
In this context please note, if you untank+retank the Objects.dsres from DS1 it's necessary to delete the files inside art/animations/skrits before retanking (since the new tank will perform as mod usually overwriting DS2 files with the same name).

I was intimidated by the long list of files and so on, but after downloading everything I felt more confident. The process really didn't seem very difficult to me; was *not* very time consuming at all and of course, I deleted the skrits as you mentioned.

Actually un-tanking and re-tanking is required if you want to play Legends of Aranna since most of the resources are in one tank. I know this is a pain but otherwise the resultant converted ds2res tank would crash the game.

Hopefully an easier way will be found in future.

Extended ranges will cause balancing problems in the maps as they're not made for such long ranges. For example the end boss encounter in Ehb with Gom could be made completely redundant as an archer or two could snipe him and he wouldn't even be able to get out of his chair (as the trigger requires the party to get within about 15 metres of him. I'll probably have to see if I can toggle invincibility or something on him to combat such an exploit).

I followed your instructions in the pdf. help file. Wasn't much of a pain at all. Maybe I'm just weird, hehe. Smile

It wasn't too bad DE, really. I was confused for a while as well. I'm having fun, so I would say check it out. The weird thing for me is getting used to the DS2 controls and stuff, having not played before.

Sorry, I didn't want to confuse you. It seems you made everything as intended.

Yesterday I only made an incorrect assumption about the proposed installation procedure and about the content in the existing mods. Actually there is a promising way without un-/retanking, it resisted already initial tests but I must ask Iryan if it could be successful too for the whole LoA too.
