ranged spell & some new bows (DS1) *updated*

Fixed an error with ammo template. New version of mod has been uploaded (test bows 0929b).
Please keep in mind that the mod is not complete.

A few weeks ago I posted a blog entry about modding some custom bows. I've been working on this mod and currently have a version that has five bows with various types of custom damage. I've also included a nature spell I've been working on that's the ranged equivalent of "charged fist". The spell can be cast on any member of the party and scales with the caster's nature magic skill.

I uploaded the mod if anybody wants to try it. Heroes.gas has been changed so the bows and the spell are already in the character's inventory. Right now the bows are a bit powerful for a brand new character but I'm still working on different things. I suggest playing with the dsloa.exe since I haven't tried it yet with original Dungeon Siege. Place the mod in the resources folder.

Kathy looks like an interesting set of bows. Could you make a version without the Heroes.gas left out or I will totally have to disable so many things so I can use it with DSLoA. For now I will give it a try with DS1. Will let you know what happens.

Kathy I tried the mod with DS1. All the spells work fine. The bows are great, except the bow called ASHES. Ashes has no arrow so can not kill anything. Think you might have left something out in it's template like the arrow. LOL A very nice package of spells and bows.

You are correct, I forgot to include the loa fire arrow ammo template itself. In earlier versions of my mod I had remembered the arrow template and if I recall correctly, that enabled things to work properly in DS1. I included everything else in this version except the ammo template. d'oh! So I guess the fire bow becomes a nice garden accessory in DS1.

I modified Heroes.gas since this is still a testing version of the mod and it just makes it easier for me to test if I have the bows "pre-loaded". When doing my testing, several bows were being sold by Jonn at the Black Hammer Forge in Stonebridge. Further testing at vendors shows the bows to be confined to lower level to a few mid level shopkeepers. I haven't played a long enough game to see if it drops as loot, but I suspect it will.

Did you like the "bow strength" spell? I mean, I like it but how useful is it in the long run? It is based on "Charged Fist" which always seemed silly to me since it was a self buff only. Bow Strength can be cast on all party members.

So anyway, still some wrinkles for me to iron out.

Thank you to bare elf for pointing out the missing fire arrow template error. I included it this time and the fire bow now works properly in both ds1 and ds loa. I uploaded the new version which is test bows 0929b. My blog post has also been updated.


DS1 girl enjoys the fire bow a lot more now.


Lili, I can't replicate your problem with the gloves not showing up. I didn't do any model changes to the weapons or the characters and I can't think of anything else that would affect gloves. What other mods are you using? Are you running a custom version of Dungeon Siege?

The problem with the gloves could have something to do with my highly modified Cat Mansion Adepts, even though I am running DS1. So I turned it off to test. With that turned off I should be able to play both DS1 and DS2. I will check it out as soon as my Garmin Watch finishes charging from my 35 mile bike ride. Smile Elf

Well I have turned off Cat Mansion Adepts and Legends of Utrae. This does not totally correct the glove problem. Male characters seem not to have problems with the gloves you have created and some of the generic gloves. My main female character can not wear any gloves correctly (showing up in both main inventory and in the glove slot, but not on her hands. Other female characters some gloves work some do not. I have reached the gliterdelve mines, The vendor has a few of your bows, and 30% of the monsters drop one of your bows. The type of bow dropped is totally random. Think I may start a new character to see if things correct themselves, something may be stuck (not removed) when I turned off the mods. If that is not successful, I will remove the remaining mods I have installed one at a time until the gloves work correctly.
That's all the news for now, Its almost 5 PM and I have not eaten lunch.

I don't do any 3D modelling, just texture stuff so I'm clueless about what's causing the glove problem. I will double check my templates tomorrow. I can't do much tonight...soooooo sleepy!

The problem was one of the mods called Catmansion Glasses. I turned off all versions of the mod because it changes all “type1” gauntlets to “glasses2”. A new gauntlet type by DDLullu that adds glasses to Catmansion characters when equipped. New head for Merik without glasses. Requires DS v1.5 (LOA). Includes separate .dsres for Adepts. The glasses work fine with Cat Mansion mods, but does not work with the New bow mod or maybe one of your glove mods. So all better everything is working fine.

Nice! You may want to un tank the mod to remove the custom heroes.gas if you are playing with an existing character. The spell that comes with this mod should be available to purchase and/or as a drop. If you get a chance to try "bow strength" let me know what you think.

I'm currently working on another iteration of the mod and will (possibly) have another update next week.

Yup, I see all of the bows except for the fire one. Looks like I need to do some work on those icons...

Yeah, those are cute. I will give them a try. I've been making fractals w/ the gimp and I think I need to just pick some textures, try them out and make a decision. Moros has been giving me some tips about using effect scripts so I should have some sparkly pics to post soon-ish.

Some screenies. I have a dozen (at least!) more lightning textures, but these are my first few picks.

The bows are still over powered so I suppose I'll have to "balance" them eventually. Balance, pfft. What's balance ever done for me!

That's a good point. I always forget to put in a minimum gold value.
